Plus it has a decent schematic section- i actually use it as a desk reference all the time. There is a lot of general info that is usefull and applicable to many amp circuits. I recomend "A desktop reference of hip vintage guitar amps" by Gerald Weber- It's a good read if you are highly technical minded or not. I've read a few of the more popular titles and have gained good knowledge from each of them. My point is that now that the Jack Darr book is back in print, they DIY community should support companies that take the time and effort to reprint long out of print books.

If by some chance any of them get reprinted, I'll buy a copy just because it's more convenient to read a book than a printed. I agree with you I have copies of quite a few long-out-of print books that will most likely never be reprinted. But if a book is out of print or the author is dead I'll download a scanned file all day long. Bottom line, I support the purchase of copyrighted material whenever possible. I don't even know if Jack Darr is still alive, and if your worried about his children, well I think Warren Buffet has a good idea about inheritance which is let em make their own stinking money. I happen to have already purchased the reprint from JK Lutherie myself. The reprint of Jack Darr's 4th edition is a recent development. I see nothing wrong with reading or downloading scanned pages of out of print old books that are no longer available for sale. Just because something is free for download on the web doesn't mean that it should be dowloaded. One of the first guitar amps I built was based on an article that was in Glass Audio. They've contributed a lot to the hifi/diy tube community with Glass Audio and Audio Xpress magazines.

pdf scans were great when the book wasn't in print and was largely unavailable, but now that the book is back in print I think it is a good idea to support the OC/AX. Plus there's schematic heaven and other great online sources.īut I am glad that Old Colony/Audio Xpress is reprinting that book. If you own Doyle's History of Marshall and Pittman's Tube Amp book, you have most everything of importance that you're likely to see. I love the Darr book but the schematics aren't that great they're for a lot of really off the wall stuff, like magnavox and sears stuff.

pdf scans on the 'Net don't include the schematics at the end of the book.
